Chip Shot: Intel 40th Anniversary Countdown
|
Only one day to go until Intel marks its 40th anniversary. When Intel introduced its first PC microprocessor no one could have predicted that the market segment for PCs would be greater than 350 million units a year. Intel's keeping its eye on the future, investing close to $6 billion in R&D this year, nearly equal to the U.S. government's budget for the National Science Foundation to build and sustain U.S. global leadership in science and engineering. About 20 percent of Intel's R&D budget is devoted to investing in new growth areas, such as providing low-cost PCs in emerging markets, providing technology for improved visualization capabilities, and helping deliver products for new types of electronic devices such as mobile Internet devices. Click here for more information on Intel's 40-year history of technology breakthroughs.
